CRIME ALERT: Daytime Residential Burglaries View and Print Brochure

September 20, 2011

Over the past couple of weeks, the Hanover Sheriff's Office, along with surrounding jurisdictions, has received several calls for residential burglaries. The incidents in Hanover have occurred in areas east, central and western Hanover County. The burglaries are occurring during the daytime hours, when the homes are unoccupied.

While Investigators are working diligently to identify persons of interest in these incidents, we would like to remind you to keep your eyes and ears open for suspicious activities in and around your area and report them by calling 911 immediately. If you have any other information you would like to share about these incidents, please contact the Sheriff's Office at 804-365-6140 (24 hour number) or, if you prefer to submit information anonymously, please call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.

As a reminder to you about your personal safety, please keep in mind the following suggestions:

  • Keep doors and windows secure when you're not home.
  • Consider adding 3-4 inch long screws into the receiver of your door frames to increase the resistance to blunt force (by kicking) of the door.
  • Record the model and serial numbers of all valuable electronic equipment and keep it in two places.
  • Use engravers on other property that does not already have a serial number (the Sheriff's Office has an engraver that can be loaned to you by calling the Crime Prevention Unit).
  • Be wary of would be solicitors that may be trying to gain information about what you have in your home.
  • Report ALL solicitors that do not have a Hanover Solicito's permit immediately to the Hanover Sheriff's Office.

If you have any other questions relating to personal safety, contact the Crime Prevention Unit at 804-365-6110.

CRIME ALERT: Stolen Multi-quip Batteries Recovered

These batteries were recovered during an arrest. It has been determined they are used for Multi-quip generators as shown above. Two batteries are used for the generator, one on each side.

Through investigation, the Sheriff's Department has determined the batteries were most likely stolen from a business in the Ashland area that uses Multi-quip generators. The owner of the generator has not reported the theft to police and they would like the person to do so since the property has been recovered.

Please call Investigator Dave Klisz if you have any information or questions. Thank you.

CRIME ALERT: Vehicle Thefts View and print prochure

The Sheriff's Office is currently investigating clusters of thefts from vehicles in the Kings Charter, Castle Tower, and Georgetown Road areas. The common factor in all of these thefts is that the victims' vehicles were unlocked.

Committing thefts from unlocked vehicles is easy for the offender while operating under the cover of darkness. These incidents usually occur in neighborhoods, where the offender goes from car to car, steals from the unlocked cars, and passes over the cars that are locked. In most cases, the items stolen include loose change, IPODs, cell phones, GPS devices, identification, credit cards, and in some cases firearms.

Deputies with the Sheriff's Office will continue to patrol the neighborhoods at night to prevent and apprehend those responsible for these crimes. To aid in their effort, we need your help and there are several actions citizens can take to assist our efforts and create an atmosphere where this activity will be reduced and increase the likelihood of apprehension if committed.

We would ask our citizens to please:

(1) Lock your car doors and store your valuables in the trunk
(2) Leave a porch light on during the hours of darkness and shut your garage doors
(3) Call the Sheriff's Office if you notice any suspicious behavior or noises.

"Items taken from unlocked vehicles, not only attribute to financial hardship and inconvenience, but in many cases secondary crimes, such as identity theft and credit card fraud, are also committed. By taking these simple and effective safeguards you can make your neighborhood safer for everyone", said Colonel David R. Hines.

If you have any questions regarding this information please contact Deputy Barry Bland at 365-7116 or 839-2256.
